If you have a business, by now you've most likely heard of the Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM) service from the US Post Office.  EDDM can be a very cost-effective way to target a certain mailing area with promotional advertising.  Using EDDM has several benefits, include:

  • The physical size of the mail piece is larger than most, so it tends to get noticed more. You can mail up to a 12” x 15” postcard for no extra charge. This is over 7 times the size of a 4"x 6" postcard, but it's 9 cents cheaper per piece.
  • Postage is 14.2 cents and you don't have to mess with stamps
  • You don't have to deal with address labels
  • You don't have to buy or rent a mailing list
  • Using the Bulk Mail Facility is not necessary
  • You can pick your mailing area by carrier routes
  • You do NOT need a Postal Mailing Permit to use EDDM

How does EDDM work?

Local businesses can reach potential customers in designated areas of their businesses by using mail delivery route information, instead of names and exact addresses.  In the past, if a business mailed fliers to a city route, specific addresses had to be printed on the pieces. with EDDM, all mailings can be distributed by Postal carriers without specific addresses because both city and rural routes are treated the same. Letter carriers deliver supplements along with the day’s mail to every door that businesses want to reach.

Many businesses, mainly B2C (business to consumer), benefit from this type of advertising, such as auto repair shops, carpet cleaners, chiropractors, landscapers, salons and spas, and individual tax preparers.
